Volunteer Opportunities
Mindspring accomplishes its mission through the kindness of our dedicated volunteers. There are various ways to contribute as a volunteer at Mindspring. We are currently only onboarding volunteers who are local to the Des Moines, Iowa and surrounding areas. Thank you for your understanding as we work on expanding capacity and creating additional opportunities for all volunteers!
Hearing Voices Facilitators
The Hearing Voices volunteer will assist staff with the coordination and facilitation of the Hearing Voices program created by Pat Deegan, PhD. The goal of this program is to increase empathy and understanding related to individuals who hear voices and is often conducted with the Des Moines Police Department and other local community based organizations.
Tabling and Outreach Associate
The Tabling and Outreach Associate will help increase awareness in the community related to the programs and training Mindspring offers. They will attend various community events as a representative of Mindspring by passing out Mindspring resources and materials to those attending, and share information about our programs and upcoming events.
Fundraising Events
Each year Mindspring hosts two major fundraising events; a golf tournament in September and a trivia night in Feburary. Our fundraising event volunteers will help with various tasks throughout the event to help with general operations of the fundiser and help us raise money for the organization.
Lived Experience Panel
At Mindspring, we’ve been gradually expanding our community panel offerings—creating spaces where individuals with lived experience can speak about mental health topics within specific populations. For example, we’ve long hosted panels with police officers and first responders, and are currently working on developing a leadership and mental health in the workplace panel. Panel volunteers will have the opportunity to share their mental health stories and experiences with the support and guidance of staff to intended audiences.
